Microsoft Announces Shut Down of Skype from May 2025

Microsoft has announced the news of shut down of Skype from May 2025 marking an end of the service once ruling the video conferencing and VOIP call space.

The news came out of recent insider releases of the Skype app, showing notifications that alert users to the shutdown. One of the messages reads: “Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available. Continue your calls and chats in Teams.” The action reflects Microsoft’s strategic effort to bring its communication services under the Microsoft Teams umbrella, hoping to offer a single platform for both personal and business users.

Popularity and Decline of Skype

Skype, established in 2003, became incredibly popular by providing free internet voice and video calls, practically transforming world communication. Microsoft purchased Skype in 2011 for $8.5 billion to incorporate its features into different Microsoft offerings. Even with these attempts, Skype saw mounting competition from newer platforms like Zoom, WhatsApp, and Slack, and its user base started declining gradually.

Skype Alternative by Microsoft

In answer to shifting market conditions and consumer tastes, Microsoft launched Teams in 2017 as an Office 365 offering. Teams took off shortly after its release, particularly among businesses, through its integration of workplace messaging, video conferencing, and document storage into a single platform. The COVID-19 pandemic spurred on the further acceleration of Teams adoption, where working remotely and collaborating virtually were the new realities.

The move from Skype to Teams is aimed at providing users with a more powerful and capable communication experience. Teams offers advanced capabilities like smooth integration with other Microsoft 365 services, stronger security protocols, and capability to host bigger meetings and live events. Microsoft promises that the migration process will be easy for users, with tools and support to enable them to migrate their contacts and conversations to Teams smoothly.

Although the consumer version of Skype will be phased out, it is worth mentioning that Microsoft had already retired Skype for Business Online back in July 2021, further cementing Teams as its go-to communication platform. Furthermore, in December 2024, Microsoft announced the retirement of Skype Credit and Skype Number services, urging users to switch to subscription-based offerings or use free VoIP services offered through Teams.

With the deadline for May 2025 nearing, Microsoft advises existing Skype users to start getting accustomed to Teams so the transition is smooth.
