The minimum legal age for driving a car or motorbike

Some people think that the best way to improve road safety is to increase the minimum legal age for driving a car or motorcycle.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

IELTS Essay on the Minimum Legal Age for Driving

A number of individuals believe that raising the minimum age for operating a motor vehicle can be an effective means of enhancing road safety. Nonetheless, I disagree with this statement. In this essay, I will argue that the minimum driving age is not the only risk factor for road accidents, but that drinking while driving is a more significant factor.

To begin, driving is a skill that can be learned at any age. As long as the individual is physically competent at controlling the vehicle, he or she is as capable of driving a car or motorcycle as an adult. Accidents are generally caused by a driver’s lack of concentration. Texting or accepting a call while driving, for example, increases the danger of an accident. In such situations, a person of any age may lose their equilibrium atop the vehicle. Infrequently, a minor is the driver of a vehicle embroiled in a traffic collision.

Apart from that, the majority of traffic accidents are caused by drunk driving. In the majority of nations, the minimum drinking age is already higher than the minimum operating age. Thus, it could be argued that adults are more likely to cause road accidents than young drivers and motorcyclists. Therefore, there is no correlation between age and road accidents, and increasing the minimum age for operating automobiles and motorcycles is unlikely to be of much assistance; rather, individuals must be educated about the dangers of drinking and driving.

In conclusion, raising the minimum driving age is less effective than preventing people from drinking and driving. Instead, implementing enhanced driver education programs, stricter licensing requirements, and promoting responsible driving behaviors could be more effective in reducing accidents and improving safety on the roads.
