What Are the New Features in iPhone 14?

On September 7, 2022, Apple held an event called “Far Out”, at which they unveiled the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. Without the bigger 6.7-inch variant, these smartphones may easily be confused with their predecessors.

With prices starting at $799, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are Apple’s latest “affordable” flagship iPhones. They are being marketed alongside the more costly iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple discontinued the “small” iPhone in 2022, and the iPhone 14 versions are available in 6.1- and 6.7-inch sizes. The name “iPhone 14 Plus,” which pays homage to the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, is applied to the new 6.7-inch iPhone 14.

New Features in iPhone 14

So, let’s have a quick look at the new features of the iPhone 14 and its variants. The most prominent features of iPhone 14 are:

Size

Apple has continued to sell models in the same device class with equal feature sets. Therefore, except for the bigger display and longer battery life, the larger iPhone 14 Plus has no special features.

Notably, this generation’s iPhones don’t come in tiny forms. According to rumours, there was not enough demand for smaller iPhones. Therefore, the 5.4-inch display size was dropped in favour of the bigger 6.7-inch model.

Design

The iPhone 14 looks almost identical to the iPhone 13 it replaces, except a few minor colour alterations. The aluminium chassis, diagonal rear camera system, and notch are identical. 460ppi is seen on the 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display.

Despite being a new model, the larger iPhone 14 Plus has all of the features of the smaller device, including the same-sized camera hump. It has a 6.7-inch, 458ppi Super Retina XDR display. But unlike the pro model size it is simulating, it lacks ProMotion.

The screens feature HDR, True Tone, and a P3 colour gamut, just as the iPhone 13. In typical operation, the OLED gives a contrast ratio of 2 million to 1 and a brightness level of 800 nits.

The only significant design difference is the U.S. version of the iPhone 14 device’s lack of a SIM card slot. Users won’t have to worry about physical cards any longer, thanks to Apple’s full commitment to e-SIM compatibility.

Processor

Apple saved the most recent A16 Bionic processor for the iPhone 14 Pro series, keeping the A15 Bionic in place. This is the iPhone 13 Pro’s version of the CPU, not the one utilised by the iPhone 13.

It boasts a 5-core GPU, allowing for better processing throughout the system and in some programmes. The iPhone 14 now has access to the improved 4K Cinematic Mode because to this upgraded CPU.

Face ID is still hidden behind the same-sized notch as the iPhone 13 and hasn’t received an upgrade. However, iOS 16 now allows users to unlock their iPhone 14 in either portrait or landscape mode.

The U1, 5G, and WiFi connections were not changed for the iPhone 14 series. Apple did, however, add the more recent Bluetooth 5.3 specification.

Emergency Call Setup

The newest iPhones might link to satellites miles above the Earth’s surface without using a massive antenna module, thanks to unique antennas and technology built by Apple. This technology is primarily designed for use in emergencies.

A user can activate Emergency SOS via satellite to send a distress signal as long as they have a good view of the sky or are beneath some light vegetation. The tool will guide the user through prompts to ensure succinct and thorough communication.

The user interface on display will inform them in which direction to aim their iPhone for the optimum satellite signal. This approach’s relaying time for messages transmitted might range from 15 seconds to several minutes.

Ports

Despite reports suggesting USB-C in the 2023 “iPhone 15,” the Lightning connector is still present. Speculation had claimed Apple might switch to a 30W fast charging speed. However, Apple maintained it at 20W.

Apple claims that the battery life has increased, putting the 6.1-inch iPhone’s usage time at 20 hours. The iPhone 14 Plus has 26-hour battery life.

Both devices feature rapid charging, which is officially rated at 20W. Therefore, you can charge the iPhone to 50% in around 30 minutes by plugging it into a 20W charger.

As with earlier versions, MagSafe accessories and charging are also supported.

Cameras

Apple added a bigger 12MP sensor with a wider f/1.5 aperture to the newly renamed Main Camera, formerly known as the Wide Camera. This makes it possible to take better images and operate in low light more quickly. This represents a 49% improvement in low light, according to Apple.

There was no mention of the macro photography function coming to non-pro phones, and the Ultra Wide Camera is unaltered. To make the capability available, Apple would need to include focusing on the Ultra Wide Camera.

The addition of an f/1.9 aperture and autofocus enhances the selfie camera. The selfie camera can capture better pictures more quickly when coupled with the depth sensors used for Face ID.

Additionally, the chipset enhancements allow for 4K filming when utilising Cinematic Mode.

Battery

Regarding battery life, Apple claims that the iPhone 14 will last “all day,” which is at best ambiguous. Fortunately, the iPhone 13 had respectable battery life, so we’re not too worried.

Aside from the iPhone 14 Pro Max, all of the iPhone 14 models feature bigger battery capacities than their iPhone 13 counterparts, according to official information on the iPhone 14 range.

Except for the biggest model, this is a favourable sign for the battery life of all the models. However, we anticipate that it will still do well on our battery test because of its adaptive display refresh rate and more effective chip.

Summary

For the iPhone 14, it appears that many of the rumours from the previous year were accurate. In actuality, the differences between it and the iPhone 13 are minimal. The iPhone 14 Plus replacing the iPhone mini is the most significant update.

It appears that the iPhone 14 is not a significant improvement over the iPhone 13, but it is still a nice device for people who are using an iPhone 12 or earlier. The iPhone 14 appears to be a modest offering for 2022 with the A15 Bionic CPU, stronger cameras, and increased battery life of the iPhone 13 Pro.
