What is Surgical Technology?

Surgical Technology is defined as the members of operating room teams, which include surgeons, anesthesiologist and circulating nurse. They work under the delegated authorities and supervision of the surgeon unless prohibited by state law or hospital policies.

A surgical technologist, are also known as scrub tech or scrub, or operating room technician. They posses high knowledge and skills in sterile and aseptic techniques. They require highly perfection while doing operation and thus they are trained very hard. The main aim for surgical technologists is to able to anticipate the next move the surgeon is going to make in order to make the procedure smooth and efficient. They have the knowledge of hundreds of surgical procedures and various instruments that that may be needed by the surgeon.

A surgical technologist possesses high knowledge in theory and application of sterile and aseptic techniques and combines the knowledge of surgical procedures, human anatomy and tools, in order to facilitate a physicians performance of diagnostic procedures. Surgical Technologists are mainly responsible for anticipating the needs of the surgeon by passing all the instruments and supplies like sponges, performing counts of the sponge, sharps, solutions and medications to the surgeon. They can fulfil the assistant circulator role if allowed by state law or hospital policy.

A surgical technologist works in clean, well-lighted and cool environments. However, it can become warm under surgical lights when wearing a sterile gown and gloves. Their team also stand for long periods and remain alert during operations. They are also prone to communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, materials and odours. They receive their training in programs offered by colleges, schools, universities, hospitals and even military.

The course duration can vary from 12 months to 2 years for completion. They are also required to take high school education for program entrance, and some of them might require prerequisite courses which include anatomy, microbiology, physiology and medical terminology.
