Can You Trust AI-Driven Vehicles for Your Safety?

With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) in the automotive industry, there are concerns about whether these AI-driven vehicles are safe for us to use.

A self-driving car is one in which no human interaction or driver is required. The vehicle is programmed with artificial intelligence, such that it can automatically make decisions while driving. These decisions are made with safety measures and precautions so that no accident occurs.

There are numerous AI applications in vehicles now, ranging from simple activities such as hands-free operation to considerably more complicated capabilities such as autonomous driving. Although there are still some worries regarding the safety of AI-driven vehicles, the available research indicates that they are generally safe and dependable.

But sometimes, these automated vehicles can cause accidents in the worst scenario, and no one is to blame.

Today at Digital Gyan, we will discuss some of the dangers associated with autonomous vehicles (AV). It’s not that one should stop using AV, but its flaws should be minimised; as it is said, “Prevention is better than cure”. Some safety drawbacks of Autonomous Vehicles (AV) are:

Cybersecurity Threat

One of the most significant threats that endangers all. Even a tiny hack of automated cars could create a disastrous accident. These AVs are connected to the internet. And we all know that any device that is connected to the internet is vulnerable to hacking. They rely on good software systems that could prevent hackers from getting control of these vehicles.

As vehicles become more connected, they become more susceptible to attacks through their communication systems. Hackers could exploit these vulnerabilities to gain access to the vehicle’s internal network and control its systems.

Your car door is even more vulnerable to these hack attacks. And not only this, there is also a danger for theft of your private data, such as your place and time of visit. A hacker might try to alter your routes and destinations, and this can become a serious threat.

Software vulnerabilities

Like any software, AI-driven vehicles are susceptible to vulnerabilities in their operating systems and applications. These vulnerabilities could be exploited to gain unauthorized access to the vehicle or even take control of its critical functions.

Malfunctions of Autonomous Vehicles

A computer sometimes fails to respond or takes a lot of time to perform a single operation. Similarly, these self-driving cars are made out of complex software and computers. And they, too, can fail in some situations. instantaneous action like stopping the car when someone crosses the road; if someone comes in the middle of the road, then what should I do? This impulsive moment can create a hostile environment for everyone present.

Till now a total of 62 Accidents have been reported to be caused by autonomous vehicles. Out of which one death of Elaine Herzberg, a pedestrian fatality was found. The major issue related to them occurs due to faults in their system.

The Experts are trying to figure out a solution that could prevent such situations and also some risk-taking decisions like hitting a person on the road or another car on the road. The primary purpose of self-driving cars is to make driving more difficult and dangerous.

Industry-Level Safety Measures

Around 200 major car companies have started their plans to build AI-enabled self-driving cars but without taking any safety measures from the industry level. If these are not taken, then it could lead to a series of harm to the end user. And who will be responsible for such damage?

If an industry is unregulated for safety and good for manufacturing excellent products, Then it’s also responsible for damage and accidents, and customers will not be willing to buy such products. One such accident occurred when a Tesla Model S, crashed into the back of a fire truck while travelling at 65 miles per hour. No casualties happened, but the damage to Tesla was a crash of wit versus property damage.

Exposure to Radiations

Not only are the AVs safe to drive, but they must also follow the safety guidelines in terms of radiation exposure. These self-driving vehicles consist of GPS, remote controls, WI-FI, music, power accessories, Bluetooth, etc. All these particular exposures to electromagnetic radiation could cause migraines, headaches, high blood pressure, difficulty breathing, eye issues, sleeplessness, and exhaustion.

Self-driving cars should be safer than manual cars.

The primary purpose of self-driving cars is to ensure greater safety than manual cars. If it does not satisfy this property, then self-driving cars should not be used. To avoid unforeseen accidents, the software and program must be made to cope with such conditions.

It should also avoid any false alarms or security, as it could irritate the person. Engineers have now found a way to provide some automation facilities. These are categorised under Level 1 to Level 5. These are:

Level 1: The cars have driver assistance for acceleration and lane changes.

Level 2: Autopilot system integration and emergency braking while the driver controls the steering wheel.

Level 3: It requires human interaction to control the vehicle, and the car can handle the safety measures and critical functions.

Level 4: No human interaction is required, but for unknown areas and under bad weather conditions, the control must be done by the user.

Level 5: Fully Automation. But requires excellent software and hardware equipped.

So, that’s all the risk that needs to be kept in mind while going for self-driving vehicles. Do share this article with your friends and keep visiting Digital Gyan for awesome posts and information.

Conclusion

By understanding and addressing these cyber security threats, we can ensure the safe and responsible development and deployment of AI-driven vehicles, reaping their benefits without compromising safety and privacy.
